Acne Scarring Treatments
Acne scarring is an extremely common complaint among teens and adults alike. It can leave skin feeling inflamed and irritated, and cause sufferers to feel self-conscious of their uneven skin tone. While there is no permanent fix for acne scarring, there are many ways to both prevent and reduce redness and improve skin tone as quickly and painlessly as possible. Read on to discover how Monteiro Beauty Clinic can help...
Overview – what is acne scarring?
Acne scars usually occur around the face and neck, and are the result of past issues with acne and teenaged spots. On occasion, acne scarring can develop as a complication of acne, where scarring and new spot development occur simultaneously.
While any type of acne spot can lead to scarring, long-term scars usually develop after a nodule or cyst bursts, creating a small but significant open wound that won’t easily heal.
Scarring can also be caused by picking or squeezing acne spots, which also causes the spot to open, and can damage the skin around it.
There are three main types of acne scars:
- Ice pick scars
- Rolling scars
- Boxcar scars
Ice pick scars are small but deep holes in the surface of the skin. They resemble tiny puncture wounds or needle marks, hence their name.
Rolling scars can present as uneven skin, without any visible puncture marks. This type of acne is caused by bands of scar tissue that form under the skin, so that the surface of the skin appears puckered and bumpy.
Boxcar scars are large singular depressions on the surface of the skin, which appear in a round or oval shape.
Acne Scarring Treatments at Monteiro Beauty Clinic:
No matter what kind of acne scarring you suffer from, we can help to reduce the effects at Monteiro Beauty Clinic, using either a laser treatment or skin needling.
1. Laser treatment
Laser treatment is a non-invasive, chemical-free way to resurface the skin and repair any damage from acne scarring. It works by removing the uppermost layer of skin (the scarred skin) to reveal the younger – unscarred - skin cells underneath.
At Monteiro Beauty Clinic, we use the Ipixel laser – a specially designed laser which creates tiny wounds on the face which stimulates collagen production and evens out the surface of the skin.
A minimum of four sessions are recommended, with approximately 6-8 weeks between sessions.

2. Skin Needling
Also called micro-needling, skin needling uses a series of extra-fine needles to puncture the skin, stimulating collagen which aids the production of new skin cells. Over time, skin needling can lead to brighter, younger and smoother skin, as the body’s collagen stores work overtime to heal facial scarring.
